The Call of Cthulhu, as illustrated by Gary Gianni, is a fusion of cinematic design, the graphic novel and illustrated books. Over a hundred finished pencil drawings with color pieces enhance and bring to life the work of two visionaries—Lovecraft and Gianni—in an extraordinary feat of storytelling and art.
Written in 1928, H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu defined the ancient gods as dark creatures who came from the stars and ruled the world before mankind. When these ancient ones awaken, humanity is plagued by a nightmare of terrors etched upon an epic backdrop. The author’s concept deeply redefined the horror story with this thrilling, dense mystery that spawned a virtual genre.
The artist Gary Gianni and designer Marcelo Anciano both felt that Lovecraft’s short story presented an opportunity to visually expand the Cthulhu Mythos and push the boundaries of illustrated books. Intense and fast-paced, the tale enabled them to explore graphic storytelling and illustrate the text in a unique way. It was a personal project for Gianni, who drew upon his decades of experience in illustrating numerous books and graphic novels.
H.P. Lovecraft’s original text has been revised in this book to exclude racial terms.
About H.P. Lovecraft:
Howard Phillips Lovecraft was responsible for creating the Cthulhu Mythos, a cycle of loosely related stories concerning “the Great Ones.” These are cosmic beings who took up residence on Earth long before humans inhabited the planet. Now they awaken to wreak havoc upon mankind. Born in 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft was a sickly child whose parents died insane. When he was 16, he wrote the astronomy column in the Providence Tribune. Between 1908 and 1923, he wrote short stories for Weird Tales magazine, among others. He died in Providence—in poverty—on March 15, 1937. After his death, his colleagues August Derleth and Donald Wandrei collected Lovecraft’s stories and made arrangement for their publication. These writings have had a great impact on modern popular culture and have influenced and inspired many other writers, including Robert E. Howard, Clive Barker, Stephen King and Neil Gaiman.

Gary Gianni began as an illustrator for Chicago newspapers and as a reporter/sketch artist for television. He has illustrated books by authors ranging from Melville and Verne to Michael Chabon and Ray Bradbury. Gianni spent several years illustrating the stories of Conan, Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn in a series of books by R.E. Howard. In comics, he worked on Batman, The Shadow, Hellboy and his own creation, Monstermen. For almost a decade, he produced the syndicated newspaper comic strip Prince Valiant. Gianni also created drawings and paintings for George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire epic novels. Currently he is finishing the illustrations for Neil Gaiman’s Death and Honey.
About Marcelo Anciano:
Marcelo Anciano has been producing limited-edition books for decades. He was pivotal in instigating the current fashion of small press books with Wandering Star publications and the Robert E. Howard library of classics, reprinted as trade paperbacks by DelRey/Random House and translated worldwide. Authors like George R.R. Martin and Neil Gaiman and artists like Gary Gianni and Greg Manchess have asked Anciano to design fine editions of their work.
During the formation of the music videos during in the 1980s, Anciano directed over 100 music videos and commercials. For a decade, he worked with talents as diverse as Duran Duran, Peter Gabriel, Little Richard and Arnold Schwarzenegger, often designing their visual look and marketing. He also has produced and written a number of feature films—including Modesty Blaise, Solomon Kane and Semana Santa—but his passion has always been fine books.
Anciano notes that his collection of books actually has caused his house to become destabilized.

Gianni has produced the paintings for George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire calendar as well as illustrations for Martin’s novel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He continues to work with Martin to illustrate future collections.
About George R.R. Martin:
George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally ever since. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid-’90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he’s allowed to leave, Martin returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.

All of Gary Gianni’s previously shown pencil sketches and paintings have been tightened up and polished for this collection, making them appear as new works. In addition, over 35 pencil drawings appear for the first time. The artist draws on his longtime experience in comics and illustration to offer a unique perspective into Martin’s universe.
The book also includes an introduction by Cullen Murphy, who discusses the art of illustration and adds context to the pictures by providing an overview of Gianni’s career. Notes from the artist reveal insight concerning his methods and the creative process of working with Martin, a relationship that has spanned five years to date.
About Gary Gianni:
Gary Gianni began as an illustrator for Chicago newspapers and as a courtroom artist for television. He has received the Eisner and Spectrum awards and has illustrated books by authors ranging from Melville and Stevenson to Robert E. Howard, Michael Chabon and Ray Bradbury. His comics include The Shadow with Michael Kaluta, Batman with Archie Goodwin, Tom Strong with Alan Moore and Indiana Jones. He is also known for his own mystery comic book The MonsterMen. Gianni teamed up with Mike Mignola to craft the graphic novel Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, and he drew the syndicated newspaper comic strip Prince Valiant with Mark Schultz for eight years. Gianni has produced the paintings for George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire calendar as well as illustrations for Martin’s novel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He continues to work with Martin to illustrate future collections.
About George R.R. Martin:
George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally ever since. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid-’90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he’s allowed to leave, Martin returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.
About Cullen Murphy:
Cullen Murphy is the editor-at-large of The Atlantic. For twenty-five years he wrote the comic strip Prince Valiant, working with his father, the illustrator John Cullen Murphy. He is the author of Cartoon County: My Father and His Friends in the Golden Age of Make-Believe.

The Prince Valiant Page is the first book collection featuring Gary Gianni’s work on Prince Valiant. This book gives a well-rounded informative look at both Gianni’s rendition of the Prince Valiant Sunday strip and his own working procedures. After 25 years as a professional illustrator, Gianni describes his new role as an assistant to John Cullen Murphy (who assisted Hal Foster--Prince Valiant's creator). Upon Murphy's retirement, Gianni became the third artist in the 70-year history of the feature. It continues with in-depth knowledge of the strip’s creative process (i.e., receiving the script, photographing models, making preliminary drawings and pencil roughs, then concluding with the finished illustrations). Supporting artwork includes collaborations between Murphy and Gianni, with Murphy’s hand written notes and instructions. Examples of Gianni’s work over the previous thirty years as a professional illustrator are included as well.
Gianni’s entertaining, insightful text reveals his methods and working relationships with Murphy and current Prince Valiant writer, Mark Schultz. Further, he explains the usage of his tools and provides many tips learned during the course of his career. Prince Valiant aficionado’s, those interested in the creation process, and enthusiasts of Gianni’s artwork will all find this book appealing.
Most reproductions are direct from the original artwork, rendered with archival quality, and displayed in museum catalog format. Gianni’s originals are delineated using brush and pen. He utilizes these tools to create tones and variations often lost in the pure black and white reproduction methods characteristically employed in newspapers and comics. About Gary Gianni
Influenced by golden age pen and ink illustrators such as Joseph Clement Coll and Franklin Booth, Gianni's illustrations provide us with striking imagery, reminiscent of the past, yet very modern and contemporary in style. Gianni skillfully handles both pen and ink and oil painting, rewarding the most scrutinizing collectors and critics.
Gianni graduated from The Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1976. His illustrations and paintings have appeared in newspapers, books, and comics. Books illustrated by Gianni include Moby Dick, Kidnapped, John Henry, Tarzan: The Lost Adventure, Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and The Complete Conan of Cimmeria: Volume Two. In the comic’s arena, he wrote and drew Indiana Jones and The Shrine of the Sea Devil, and his own creation The MonsterMen Mysteries, which have appeared as back-up features to Mike Mignola’s Hellboy series. Furthermore, he drew issues of Classics Illustrated and The Shadow. Gianni received an Eisner award in 1997 for his art on “Heroes,” a Batman story for the Batman: Black and White anthology. Gianni is the recipient of the Spectrum Fantasy Award. He is the current illustrator of the Prince Valiant Sunday strip.
